We have 7,107 of them. Help one get back on its feet.
If you weren't sleeping under a rock for the past week, you are
probably aware that a Category 5 Typhoon named Yolanda (Haiyan)
hit almost the whole region of Visayas and parts of Luzon and Mindanao last November 8. Along with strong winds and torrential rain, came giant waves that killed and destroyed almost everything along its path. As of today, Nov 13, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council has already recorded 2,275 deaths and still counting; many are still missing, many are injured and many are left homeless and hungry. Leyte and Samar, which were the two provinces that were badly hit, are still struggling to get on their feet. The national government, other nations, the various non-government organization both here and abroad are already working together to help these two provinces. However, there are provinces, such as those in the Panay islands, that were also affected by the super typhoon.
As everybody and almost all relief efforts are already centered in Leyte and Samar, some colleagues and I decided to extend aid to those provinces in the Panay island that were also affected by the typhoon but are not really being prioritized right now may be because their LGUs can still control the situation. However, they are also in need of help, most especially those living in the small islands. Many lost not only their homes but also their boats that serve as their means of transportation and livelihood. Thus, we are launching the "Adopt a Small Island Initiative". Our own little way of helping those affect by Typhoon Yolanda.
There are two ways on how you can help those people in the small islands:
1. You can donate food, water, and materials for temporary shelter.
2. You can help in building new boats by donating cash. A non-motorized boat can cost at least P10,000.00.
For those who would like to help or inquire about the initiative you can contact us through Monica Ortiz (amdortiz@gmail.com) or through Joan Domingo (jtrdomingo@gmail.com). All the help that we would get, whether it be in-kind or cash, would be properly acknowledged and accounted for.
Your simple kindness would go a long way for the people in the small islands in Panay. Thank you.
