Ready...Get set...UPCAT!

Ah. Its that time in August when the whole UP system is frantic because the UPCAT (University of the Philippines College Admission Test) is fast approaching. Classrooms are prepared, Saturday classes are suspended, and there is horrendous traffic inside every UP campuses in the country.

I remember the time when I had to take it myself six years ago (it was that loooong already?!?). I was super scared that I wouldn't be able to answer the questions. I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to finish the test. Most of all, I was terrified that I wouldn't pass and get into UP.

Being able to be admitted in this prestigious institution is a dream come true for almost everyone. As the arrogant professors of the University would say, being able to enter UP means you are part of the crème de la crème of the country. That you are one of the few who possesses a great mind (no offense to non-UP people).

So for those who will be taking the UPCAT, here are some tips that would probably be useful:

1. Get a good night sleep.
There's no point in worrying what will appear in the exam. So instead staying up the whole night, get as much sleep as you can so you'll be super alert during the exam. The exam is so long, you would probably get sleepy. So as an added tip, bring candies.

2. Don't Study the Night Before
Seriously. Don't even look at your notes or reviewer. Try to relax and calm your nerves. If possible, try to do something fun the day before so you feel refresh during the day of the exam.

3. Eat your meals before taking the exam.
Your brain would need all the nutrients it can have. The UPCAT last for at least 5 hours. Although, food is allowed during the exam, you would probably not be able to eat that well because you're too busy answering the exam.

4. Read the directions well.
A lot of people don't read the directions so what happens is they do the wrong thing and would have to correct it in the nick of time. So please please read it and listen carefully to your proctor.

5. Don't Stay in One Number for More Than 3 minutes.
There is a specific number of minutes allotted for each part of the exam. You might miss out on a lot of other questions because you stayed too long in one number. And remember that you can't go back to those parts that you missed.

6. Guessing is good once in a while.
There would really be question that you wouldn't know the answer. So instead of wasting your time on that question, guess. Sometimes, your guesses can be right. Here is also a very interesting trivia, if you're in the Science part, letter C is probably the correct answer and in the Math part, its going to be letter B. I don't know if this is true but I bore that in mind when I took it and apparently it worked.

I think that's about it. Taking the exam might be stressful but try to take it all in stride. Don't over think before and after the exam. Remember, that things happen for a reason. If you pass, hooray for you but if you don't maybe there is another school that would be able to hone your potentials more. So for those who will be taking the UPCAT tomorrow and on Sunday, GOOD LUCK! Do your best!
